Wat Sai Moon, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Bayinnaung (13 February 1516 – November 1581) was the third king of the Toungoo dynasty of Burma (Myanmar). During his 30-year reign, which one historian termed the "greatest explosion of human energy ever seen in Burma", Bayinnaung assembled the largest empire in the history of Southeast Asia, which included much of modern day Burma, Manipur, Mong Mao (Chinese Shan States, Yunnan), Lan Na (northern Thailand), Siam (southern Thailand) and Lan Xang (Laos).
The following year King Bayinnaung marched to Mong Nai (1557) and then the Lanna kingdom of Chiang Mai (Zin Mè 1558) taking both cities[1]. After Ching Mai was taken by King Bayinnaung, he built the monestry in the old city which was known as WatSaiMoon. As a matter of fact, WatSaiMoon is one of the historic sites for the Myanmar as well as for Thai government. As mentioned by Sayataw, who was 92 year old age and living very healthy now, this monastery was built by Bayinnaung Burmese Militrary 450 years ago. In fact, if you would like to see the Burmese architectural design of monestry in King Bayinnaung era, this monestry will be the last resources in the world. It should be noted that Sayataw was born in Sagaing, Burma. He is the eighteenth Satataw of this wat or monastery since the monastery was built.
When you visit Chiang Mai, this wat or monastery will be one of the great attractions for the tourist especially Burmese. More information will be provided after interview with Sayataw. In the future, it's expected to see better management and financial support by responsible organizations and people to conserve this historic site. It should also be noted that Thai government is protecting this historic site for surrounding greedy business aggression. Thanks to Thai government!
